Comp2400 and Comp6240 - Relational Databases - Semester Two 2007

This course aims to provide an understanding of relational databases. The central topics are the relational data model, and SQL. This will include a little of the underlying mathematics and notions of intergrity, constraints and normalisation. We will also learn conceptual modelling for database design and DBMS techniques for performance, security and recoverability.

12:57 Friday 26 October - Greg now has the remaining assignments from Kunnal's groups, so they can be collected this afternoon during consultation time. It was Greg's bad, not Kunnal's that they were not available this morning, sorry.

from a unix shell in one of the DCS machines. (Or comp6240 if that's your course.) You can ssh in if that's more convenient.

19:17 Sunday 21 October - Solutions to labs 3 through 5 are now available. Warning! There may be mistakes - if you think a solution is wrong, please ask.

11:08 Friday 19 October - No lecture on Tuesday 23 October. Time to start revising for the exam!

18:13 Sunday 7 October - Here is assignment 2. Its due on Monday 22 October at 5pm. Submission will be electronic, so put your work in a plain text file ass2.txt. Technical submission details coming soon.

14:02 Friday 28 September - Approval has been granted for the marking scheme to change to a "redeemable" one, so if you do better in the final exam than you did in the mid-test, the final will count for 70% and the mid-test for nothing.

Assessment

For both courses, the assessment will be

if final exam result is better than the mid-semester exam
70% - Final Exam
20% - Assignments (2 at 10% each)
10% - Laboratory exercises
otherwise
50% - Final Exam
20% - Mid-Semester Exam
20% - Assignments (2 at 10% each)
10% - Laboratory exercises

Some questions in the exam and the assignments will have a version for the undergraduates (Comp2400) and a version for the postgraduates (Comp6240).
