COMP3750 - Project Work in Computer SystemsCOMP3760 - Project Work in Information Systems
Welcome to COMP3750 and COMP3760 for semester 1 in 2009! Syllabus: Students will conduct a small project, under supervision, that will act as a capstone to the Computer Systems (COMP3750) or Information Systems (COMP3760) majors by applying and increasing the depth of the student's knowledge in this area. The activities in the course will normally include some combination of reading, writing, implementation, evaluation and presentation as appropriate to the topic. The learning objectives, project overview and assessment arrangements will be specified at the outset using the Department of Computer Science form 'Independent Study Contract'. Unit Value: 6 units. Prerequisites: Written approval of Head of Computer Science. The minimal background is 24 units of 2000-level IT courses; the general guideline is 24 units of 2000/3000 level IT courses at a Distinction or higher average. Please contact the course coordinator first if you are interested in doing a COMP3750 or COMP3760 project. Next, you will need to find an appropriate topic and supervisor. Once oyr supervisor confimrs this to the course coordinator, s/he will collect and forward student requests to the Head of the Department. Proposed Assessment: An appropriate combination of written report, project artefacts and documentation and presentation, which may include a demonstration of the project. The assessment scheme for MCOMP projects will serve as a starting point; however, apart from reduced scope, as high a standard in the demonstration of Project Management is not required. Project Format: Students will write a report which will deal with a topic in computer systems (COMP3750) or information systems (COMP3760). Beginning with a project topic, they will undertake a review of existing literature both generally and specifically relevant to the topic as discussed with the supervisor. From there, they will develop a detailed project plan and description of the project topic, encompassing a theoretical and/or an experimental enquiry (research-style project). Alternately, an `implementation-style project may be chosen, where the focus is on producing a software artefact. The student will simultaneously study generic research-and project related skills in Community of Practice meetings, which they will then apply to their project work. The project work can include analysis, design, and implementation depending upon what has been arranged with the supervisor and project co-ordinator in the 'Independent Student Contract'. See the report and organization sections for the MCOMP Project rules for more details. Course coordinator: Weifa Liang . It should be noted that with undergraduate and postgraduate project courses are centrally co-ordinated with an overall projects co-ordinator. Important dates (timetable): see the overall projects timetable. Project Proposals: See the CS Projects Page for 2012 proposals. See also the proposals for 2007: COMP3750 (CS), COMP3760 (IS).
