COMP3760 - Project proposals for semester 1 / 2007

A project proposed by Tom Gedeon and Peter Christen:

    Projects proposed by Tom Worthington:

      Web2Pad Multimedia Computer

Design a low cost hand held computer for educational and entertainment purposes. The Web2Pad will be a pocket size device costing $US50 to produce in volume. It will be used for education in developing nations and for entertainment in the first world. The unit will be able to operate standalone and be synced with MP3 players and telephones. Students can research different aspects of the system's hardware, software and courseware. See: Web2Pad Educational Computer
Pocket Terminal or Car Computer Multimedia Device?

    • Creating a web version of "The Art of Narritjin Maymuru" CDROM

      http://epress.anu.edu.au/narritjin_citation.html
Rationale: This project explores difficulties and potential of translating complex multimedia objects - often created for CD-ROM - to web-based formats for long-term accessibility on multiple devices.
The brief: Research appropriate means of delivery for complex multimedia projects, including formats and standards suitable for archiving and access. Translate the "The Art of Narritjin Maymuru" filemaker database and interface to a web-based form that is potentially readable on many devices. Experiment with the potential of the web to present this content in new ways to give the user maximum control over how to use and present this material, whilst maintaining the integrity of the original project. Apply levels of access restrictions to the images and video.

    • Sound recognition and video annotation for the Bidwern project

Rationale: The Bidwern project has produced large amounts of digital video material filmed on the Arnhem Plateau in the Northern Territory. The recordings are in the local Aboriginal languages - Bininj Kunwok. To utilise this video for a land management program researchers wish to search the video for key Aboriginal language terms and link the video into a database.
The brief: Research existing open-source speech recognition tools and video annotation tools. Create a workflow to recognise recorded words in video and store the timecode in a database. Create a link in the database to the video segment stored in the ANU's repository D-Space. Utilise existing open-source software where possible.
