Assignment 1: 20%
Assignment 2: 20%
Mid semester test: 10%
Final exam: 50%
There will be two programming assignments, worth 40% of your total mark. The second is usually an extension of the first.
Marking is by presentation to the tutor or lecturer in the scheduled lab session for the week it is due. You will run your program on a lab computer, demonstrate how it meets the assignment specifications, and answer questions about the design and implementation.
You should also submit your code after the demonstration to your lecturer or tutor for feedback. Well designed and implemented code will receive extra marks.
Each assignment will be offered with two levels of difficulty: a base specification for a pass or credit level mark, and an extra specification for a distinction level mark.
Programming assignments may be done individually, or in pairs with the agreement of your tutor or lecturer. Pairs must be both undergraduate or both postgraduate, and larger groups are not permitted. A pair presents just once and both members receive the same mark.
Students who do not reach 10 on an assignment can resubmit again for a maximum mark of 10 before the end of semester.
Designing your own assignments. If you have your own idea for a graphical project, discuss it with me. If I approve, you can submit your own project instead of the standard assignments.
The final exam will be 50% of your final mark. It will be an open book exam without any programming. (Or rather no actual programming in Java/C: you may be asked to describe a series of operations or steps.)
There will be one short test before the mid-semester break, worth 10%. This will be similar to the final exam in style but much shorter.
To pass this unit you must score at least 20 for assignments and score at least 20 in the final exam. If you do not, you will fail with a mark of either 44/100 or the sum of your marks, whichever is lower.
(There is no minimum mark required for the mid semester test.)
Supplementary exams may be offered to students whose final mark is at least 45/100 but less than 50/100. The maximum possible course mark after sitting a supplementary exam is 50, a pass.
Your final grade will follow the university guidelines, with 50-59 a pass, 60-69 credit, 70 and up for distinction or higher distinction.
Students aiming for a D/HD grade are expected to complete both assignments at the distinction level of difficulty, and to do additional study of topics not covered in lectures and apply these to assignments.
