Introductory Programming In Java

Assessment scheme

The assessment will contain the following three components.

  1. Homework (15%)
    • You can get up to 15 points for this component
    • It consists of 7 exercises: the home works which follow every lab. Each completed and shown on time homework will allow you to earn 2 points (except for the homework 7 which will be marked out of 3 points). The homeworks solutions shall be presented for marking during the lab hours according to the schedule (unless a special arrangement is made; as a rule, emailed solutions will not be accepted)

  2. Assignments (15%+20% = 35%)
      There will be two assignments:
    • The first will involve Java's syntax and program structure, basic libraries input/output and text processing;
    • The second assignment will be about extending a Java application which has a GUI (graphical user interface) and some graphics. A substantial part of this work will require additional learning of Java's Swing (and Java2D) libraries;

    The first assignment will be marked out of 15 points, while the second will be slightly more valuable — out of 20 points.

  3. Final exam (50%)
    • The final examination will take place on June during the normal examination period. It will be a three hour hybrid examination test, which will be conducted in a computer lab and include both conceptual (theory) questions as well as programming problems (to be done on computer). The exam will be worth 50 points (half of the course total).

Plagiarism

  • No group work is permitted for any part of the assessment. We do encourage you to discuss your work in the labs and lectures, but we expect you to do the assessable work by yourself.

  • We do take plagiarism seriously! You should read the chapter in the Department of Computer Science Student Handbook that discusses assessment (Chapter 6), particularly the sections 6.4 and 6.5 which regard the Misconduct in examinations (pertinent to assignments and other forms of assessment) and Collaboration versus misconduct in assignments.

Final course mark

  1. To pass this course you must score at least
    • 27.5 out of 50 for the sum of your home works and assignments, and
    • 22.5 out of 50 for your final exam mark

  2. If you get less than the minimum required score for the final exam mark, or less than the minimum required score for your compound practical (labs plus assignments) mark, then you will fail this course with a final mark that is either 44 out of 100 OR the sum of your marks, whichever is the lower.

  3. Otherwise, your final course mark will be the sum of all your marks.

Final marks are moderated in departmental examiners' meetings at the semester end and may be scaled as a result of this moderation.

Supplementary exams

Supplementary exams will be awarded only to those students who meet both of the following criteria:

  • The student has a final mark of at least 45/100, but less than 50/100.

Access to your marks

You should be able to view your marks using StReaMS (the Student Registration and Marks System). You need to login using your ANU ID and password. If you have problem with accessing your marks, if they are missing or appear to be wrong, contact the course coordinator.
