Individual Project Courses in the Department of Computer Science

These pages are for semester-long, (nominally) individual project courses under the Master of Software Engineering (MSEng), Master of Computing (MCOMP) and the Bachelor of Information Technology (BIT) degrees. Normally, the project is regarded as having an implementation emphasis (as opposed to a research emphasis). The projects usually involve the construction and evaluation of a substantial software artefact, with the principles of (software) project management being used to guide its development and documentation.

Project Rules

Please have a look at the overarching project principles first: General Principles and Policies.

Before you can then actually start your project to you to fill and sign a Independent Projects Study Contract. Please discuss the contents of this contract with your direct project supervisor and present it to your course supervisor as well as to the overall projects supervisor.

Course Co-ordinators

Co-ordinators are appointed for each project course. There is also an overall projects co-ordinator. Note that in both cases, the co-ordinators may change from semester to semester.

If you are a student intending to enroll in a project course, you should contact the overall projects co-ordinator as soon as the semester starts (or even before). If you want information on one of the specialist areas, then contact the relevant course co-ordinator. In most cases, enrollment is conditional on finding a suitable project topic and a willing supervisor.

The overall projects co-ordinator since semester 2 2009 is Uwe Zimmer . The individual courses and their second examiners (which are closer to the individual fields than the overall co-ordinator) are:

COMP8720 Project Work in Software Engineering I Dr Chris Johnson
COMP8730 Project Work in Software Engineering II Dr Shayne Flint

COMP8740 Artificial Intelligence Project Dr Eric McCreath
COMP8750 Computer & Programming Language Systems Project Dr Peter Strazdins
COMP8760 Computer Science Project Prof Brendan McKay
COMP8770 eScience Project Dr Peter Strazdins
COMP8780 Information & Human Centered Computing Project Dr Peter Strazdins
COMP8790 Software Engineering Project Dr Shayne Flint

COMP3750 Project Work in Computer Systems Dr Peter Strazdins
COMP3760 Project Work in Information Systems Dr Peter Strazdins

Some Notes on Projects

Current Project Topics

Note: students may suggest their own projects in negotiation with the overall projects coordinator (and potential supervisor).
