Some notes for International Students

Experience has shown that international CS prograduate students, especially those from non-English-speaking backgrounds, can take some time to adjust to the university culture in Australia. ANU offers some assistance to you to, in particular, improve your independent study and essay writing skills. The ANU Academic Skills and Learning Centre offers individual consultations and some small classes. They offer a University English Language Program (UELP) to help you improve your English listening and speaking skills. Follow the links to "International Students" and to "Postgraduate Students".

If you are concerned about your English language skills we specifically encourage you to consider the course ESEN6101 - Extended University English.

Overseas students in particular should familiarise themselves with the standards of assessment at our school, as the ANU culture for these matters may be different from their home universities.

You should familiarise yourself with Chapter 6 of the CS Student Handbook, particularly with regard to acceptable versus unacceptable levels of collaboration. Also important is the ANU Academic Honesty and Plagiarism page.

Your choice of courses every semester is a very important matter, as the consequences of making a bad choice can be particularly serious for International Students. In making your choice, consider your abilities (technical and language), and the nature of the assessment of the course. It is strongly recommended that you study the course home pages, attend the first few lectures, and speak to the lecturers of any courses that you are seriously considering. Note that you can finalise your enrolment till the end of week 2.
