Abstract: The collocation and filtering method of the surveying engineer and geophysicist H. Moritz separates signal from noise in addition to estimate parameters. This paper reviews the collocation and filtering method from a data smoothing viewpoint. For the case of unknown signal covariance some proposals for choosing the smoothing or regularization parameter are presented. The application of the method to two-dimensional Helmert transformations is investigated.
