Different courses and different academics in the Department of Computer Science (DCS) use  talk  groups in different ways.

During a review in 1999, I identified the following five models for DCS  teach.<course-code>.talk  newsgroups:

  1. The newsgroup is solely for student use. Staff do not read the newsgroup.

  2. The newsgroup is primarily for student use. Staff may read the newsgroup but do not post to it.

  3. The newsgroup is primarily for student use. Staff read the newsgroup regularly but rarely post to it except to correct errors of fact.

  4. The newsgroup is an important means of communication between students and staff. Staff read the newsgroup regularly and actively post to it. Students are advised to read the newsgroup regularly.

  5. The newsgroup is an essential means of communication between students and staff. Staff read the newsgroup regularly and actively post to it. Students are expected to read the newsgroup regularly.

Note:  teach.<course-code>.talk  newsgroups were replaced by  <course-code>.talk  phorum discussion groups which have been replaced by  <name>.talk  forums.

Students should determine which model is being used by which staff member in a particular course in a given semester.

Usually,  <name>.talk  forums (discussion groups) for which Carol is responsible belong to model 4.
