1997 Doeberl Cup
by Shaun Press
GM Ian Rogers once continued his outstanding record in the Doeberl Cup with another convincing victory, making it 9 wins since his first victory in 1980. Rogers started the event with 5 wins before cruising to 6/7 with draws over GM Simen Agdestein and IM Michael Gluzman. The crucial game for Rogers (and of the tournament) was his 4th round clash with GM Daryl Johansen. With both players on 3/3 the winner would be hard to catch.

Rogers dominance of the event was one of the few things that remained the same in the 1997 event. This year saw a number of significant changes to the Doeberl Cup. This years venue was Fenner Hall and further enhanced the growing relationship between the Australian National University and the Australian chess community. Also in use for the first time were Digital Game Timers (DGT's) which were supplied by Australian Chess Enterprises. The new clocks , and the new time limits, were well received by the players and it is clear that digital clocks will become the preferred timer for tournaments in this country.
The 1997 tournament also saw the return of government support in the shape of a grant from the ACT Department of Sport, Racing and Recreation. This support was well received as was the opening speech by the Sports Minister, Mr. Bill Stefaniak.
While Rogers lead the tournament from start to finish a number of other fancied players were not so fortunate.
The first round of an event is often the most important for players in the bottom half of the field. If you can catch a titled opponent before they have had a chance to settle down then an upset is on the cards. Indeed Round 1 saw 3 titled players upended by lower ranked opponents. Geoff Saw beat IM Michael Gluzman, Danny Dwyer defeated IM Ben Martin, and in the biggest Doeberl Cup upset in a number of years, Brett Tindall took just 20 moves to beat GM Simen Agdestien.

The upsets of the early rounds made it clear that there would be no easy games in the tournament. Aside from the difficulties in getting past the top seeds, a number of strong junior players were vying for selection in overseas events.
GM Ian Rogers had a fortunate escape in the second round after Ingela Erikksen overlooked a drawing continuation in there game. IM John-Paul Wallace wasn't so lucky as he miscalculated a combination against Sydney player Jens Muekke and just lost a piece.

Once Ian Rogers reached 4/4 the battle focussed on the minor placings. Due to the upsets in the early rounds the big clashes between the top seeds were postponed to the later rounds. It also meant that a number of players who started the event well ran into trouble in the home stretch.

The strongest Doeberl Cup in a number of years ended in another Rogers victory. Daryl Johansen continued his good Doeberl Cup form with a equal second, along with IM John-Paul Wallace, who finished with 4 wins after being on 1.5/3
The tournament also showed that Australia has a number of up and coming junior players, as a number of titled players can confirm. Also making a run as an up and coming player was Manuel Weeks. He finished equal 5th with 4.5/7 and lost only to Daryl Johansen, and that from a favourable position.
The Major and Minor tournaments continued to attract large numbers, which is hardly surprising given the prize money and status of these events.
The Major attracted 58 players and ended in a tie between Lee Jones and Joel McDonald with 6/7. Joel must really enjoy Easter in Canberra as it is the second time he has won the Major. Both players won crucial last round games against Under 200 tournament professionals Ilia Ilic and Johnny Bolens.
The Minor was the biggest of the 3 events with 61 players. The popular winner of this event was Rob Simmons, proving that organising chess events (like the Albury weekender) doesn't sap your playing strength. In a tense last round 5 players started on 5/6 but Simmons was the only one to score the full point.
