Advice/Options for Students Impacted by Travel Restrictions

Students halfway through their TechLauncher Projects (COMP3500, COMP4500, COMP8715)

Option A – pause project (recommended option):
Students will not be required to complete the project in two consecutive semesters. This means that you may “pause” your project and enrol into the second half in Semester 2, 2020.

Your final grade will be assessed as though you completed the project in two consecutive semesters.

Option B – replace the second half of your project with a technical elective:
Students will discontinue their project and be graded on the work completed to date. An approved course will replace the second half of the project.

This means that undergraduate students can choose to complete a 3000- or 4000-level course and postgraduate students can choose to complete an 8000-level course instead. If you choose this option, you must confirm your replacement course with CECS Student Services

Option C – continue current project off-campus:
! This option is only available for Semester 1 2020.
!! This option is only possible with a minimum 10 megabit-per-second internet connection.

Students will attempt to complete their project while off-campus. Before choosing this option, you will need to:
  • Contact their team members and client to determine if they approve of you completing the project off-campus.
  • If approved, you will need send your team members and clients approval to Charles Gretton and Penny Kyburz
  • Throughout the semester you must keep a detailed project logbook and share weekly videos of their progress with their team, client, tutors, mentors, examiners and shadows.

Additional notes for Option C:
  • Students completing their project off-campus are expected to attend all course activities remotely (especially the weekly tutorials). To do this you will need to have a quiet space with minimum 10 megabit-per-second internet connection. If you do not have these resources, you should not attempt to complete your project off-campus.
    • You will not be required to attend the program showcase.
  • We have already been notified by some clients that they are not able to work with team members who are attempting to complete their project off-campus. If your client is unable to work with you, we can allocate you to a new team (see Option D).

Option D – reallocation to a new team to complete project off-campus:
If students are unable to continue their current project because their team and/or client are not able to work with off-campus members AND the student has access to a quiet space with minimum 10 megabit-per-second internet connection, they will be allocated to a new team. You will be added to:
  • An already formed team that can work with off-campus team members, or
  • A small professional services team.

Option E - completion by individual project:
Students who are to continue their current project AND are intending to graduate in July 2020 AND have a GPA 5.5/7.0 may have the option to replace the second half of the project with an individual project. Students will be required to find a supervisor.

Students starting their TechLauncher Projects (COMP3500, COMP4500, COMP8715)

Students who will be graduating in December 2020:

Students who will NOT be graduating in December 2020:
