Engineering students at ANU are required to undertake an individual project over the course of two semesters.
They are expected to manage all aspects of their individual project, from conceptualisation through the planning phase to the monitoring and control of the project performance and the ultimate achievement of the assessment deliverables.
The Department of Defence and Royal Australian Navy have endorsed engineering student Steve Lonergan to complete a research project on their behalf.
“I am looking at the processing of video and camera imagery from Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) operating in a maritime environment, to automatically find, classify and identify vessels in the area, and to notify the operator of objects that failed to be classified that may be of interest.
“This processing will also allow for information about the vessels to be extracted, including identification of any key items on board.
“This project is part of a larger group of projects with the goal of providing the Royal Australian Navy with an understanding of the capabilities and limitations of UAS operations in an Australian maritime environment.”
