Over the weekend of 24th - 25th October I attended the Ruxcon 2015 (aka Ruxcon 11) computer security conference in Melbourne (https://ruxcon.org.au). Far from being simply a group of tinfoil/propellor hats, this technical conference has platinum sponsors Telstra and Australian Signals Directorate (ASD) and is a gathering of hundreds of the leading computer security specialists in Australia with a wide line-up of international presenters, including Dr. Paul Vixie (of DNS/BIND fame) amongst others.
I'll attempt to highlight some of the more interesting talks I went to, including the closing panel discussion which was led by current CECS M.Eng. student Dr. Silvio Cesare.
One issue that Dr. Cesare highlighted in leading the Panel Discussion is where various universities are up to in terms of teaching and research in cyber-security. Hopefully discussing this may help ignite some discussion on how researchers and educators in CECS/RSCS want to see us positioned in this space going into the future.
