Behind the scenes: Kambri tour

Wednesday 23 May 2018

A small group of ANU Engineering and Computer Science staff along with Pro Vice-Chancellor Education, Professor Grady Venville were invited by the University’s building contractor Lendlease to visit the impressive Kambri site last Friday.

The tour highlighted the breadth and scale of the largest construction project to take place at ANU. When open in early 2019, Kambri will provide new cultural centre for the University where people can live, study and connect with one-another in a vibrant and energetic atmosphere.

Lendlease Construction Manager and ANU engineering graduate Ben Owen led the tour. Mr Owen shared how the project is passing the expected milestones. Student accommodation towers are well underway with floorplans and common areas starting to take shape. Construction of the teaching building, the pool and gym areas are also on schedule, and within the next two weeks cladding will be seen around some of the new buildings near Fellows Oval.

Professor Grady Venville, Pro Vice-Chancellor Education shared her delight at seeing the Kambri project come to life.

“It’s really exciting to see the hive of activity in the Kambri precinct, and witnessing the transformation of the building site into a functional environment supporting both education and student accommodation,” said Professor Venville.

Dr Adrian Lowe from the ANU College of Engineering and Computer Science was pleased to see an ANU engineering graduate at the helm of such a mammoth project.

“During recent discussions with Ben, it’s evident that he’s brought his systems engineering approach to the project. From the broadest possible base to ensure minimised issues and complexities later down the road,” Dr Lowe said.

“It’s inspiring to see him succeed in his career and hear how his time at ANU has offered him added advantages along the way.”

The project is on track to open in early 2019. More information can be found on the Kambri website.
